1. What is computer? What are the features of computer?

Features/Characteristics of Computer
  • Accuracy - Till the input is correct computer produces 100% accurate output. Computer produces wrong output only when the input is wrong. This is termed as 'GIGO'.
  • Reliability - As computer produces accurate result we can rely on the result produced by computer.
  • Speed - Computer can perform millions of instructions per second which is termed as MIPS. Computer works in very high speed. Processing speed of computer is measured in terms of MHz or GHz.
  • Diligence - Computer never feels bored. Computer can perform task consistently without being tired.
  • Versatility - Computer can be used in different fields to perform different tasks. That's why computer is called a versatile machine.
  • Storage - Storage capacity of computer is very high. Basic unit of data storage is byte which of collection of 8 binary digit. 1 byte equals 1 character as one unformatted character occupies 1 byte of space in disk.
  • Automation - A computer is an automatic machine. After any instruction is given to computer, it performs automatically.
  • Precision - Although computer is 100% accurate it may be able to produce 100% accurate result in arithmetic calculation. We can specify the level accuracy to be maintained by computer.

  • Internet is defined as the largest global public network.
  • It is the network that covers entire world.
  • It connects millions of computer network all over the world.
  • It is composed of different networks in world. Hence, known as network of network.
  • Through the internet, people can share information and communicate from anywhere.
